Role: The chained fire elemental beneath the volcano
Location: The Caldera
First met: Session 1: The Last Chain

A colossal elemental of molten rock that rose out of the lava lake as a swelling bubble, taking on eye sockets dripping lava, a horn and a maw of dripping fangs. Manacles carved with dwarven runes were locked on its wrists, waist, ankles and neck, with chains running down into the lake. Most were already broken when it surfaced, snapped by the deaths of the people thrown in to feed it.

It screamed, and lava and fire filled the caldera. It summoned a whirlwind of heat over the lake that drained everyone it touched. Then it turned on the cheering salamanders, swallowed every one of them in a tidal wave of lava, and grew. Had it broken its last chain and got free, the volcano would have exploded, taking Neefox and probably the whole island with it.

At every table Forge’s ritual at the temple altar opened a tear beneath it and dragged it, shrinking and torn apart, back into the Plane of Fire.

At each table

  • Session 1 (Table 1): It broke all but one chain, crushed the rock fingers and their fifty salamanders into the lava, and was dragged through the portal shrinking to a single tiny flame.
  • Session 2 (Table 2): It rose after the last salamander cried Tharizdun!, snapped another chain as it fed, and spun, lost its grip on the peninsula and was sucked into the portal.
  • Session 3 (Table 3): It caught Zarek’s spell out of the air and swallowed it, drowned the salamanders and doubled in size, then tore loose its last chain before the vortex tore its arms off and pulled it down.
  • Session 4 (Table 4): Its first spray of lava knocked Adam down. It snapped two chains and grabbed at the cavern roof as the vortex dragged it down, one arm torn off and then the other. Afterwards the lava fell and the peninsula came up clear.
