The Lordship of the Isles.
Neefox is a silver-mining colony on a volcanic island far out along the long chain of the Lordship of the Isles, in seas where pirates roam. The whole island is a volcano, rocky and thinly grown over with small pockets of jungle, and it fills the sky behind the town. The colony clings to a sheer cliff above the water, house stacked on house, every one cut from black basalt or coral stone, painted its own bright colour and roofed in red, blue or ochre. Most of the houses are humble. One is not.
The island trades silver above all, with stone and every other kind of rock it gives up, and the silver pays the pirates to leave the town alone. There is a church to Bleredd, god of mines and miners. There are not many gnomes, because the heat is bad for the complexion. Lately people have been disappearing, miners, fishermen and farmers alike, and the governor will tell anyone who asks, and many who don’t, that there are definitely no cultists on Neefox.
A mule trail climbs from the town into the island’s interior and up the volcano to the mine at Tilva’s Furnace.
