A two-level stone fort on the mountainside above the barracks, six cannon pointing out to sea, soldiers walking the walls with lanterns and watching the horizon rather than the island. A great brass warning bell hangs from a pole on top of the main tower; a door in the tower leads to a magazine of gunpowder barrels and stacked shot.
The courtyard holds a gallows, half-built, and a lashed cage of driftwood and bamboo with a heavy iron padlock. Radford “Bull” Carver was in it, in manacles and a ball and chain.
Two things left the fort that night that should not have. The clapper of the alarm bell, snipped out by Pierre Snaggletooth. And the cage itself gave up one of Marley’s arms — it had been lashed into the frame as a spar.
The portcullis stands open. The guards watch the sea.
