Player: Killian
Class: Seer
Ivek is a half-orc Seer, taken in as a child by the cult of Mugdulbulb for his aptitude in premonition and prediction magic. He found comfort in having an explicitly prescribed purpose in life, and took solace in the simplicity of following orders without question. Trained as a seer, he helped identify locations prime for the cult’s missionary work, but was rarely on the frontlines of any activities — until his world was upended when he finally witnessed firsthand the bloody cost Mugdulbulb demanded. He slipped away amid the chaos, grateful — to someone, though certainly not to Mugdulbulb; he still isn’t sure who — that at least a few of the unfortunate adventurers targeted that day seemed to make it out too.
In the years since, Ivek has searched for a new purpose to fill the void the cult left behind, wracked with guilt and desperate to bring something good into the world. Taking up protection work as he traveled, he eventually encountered the church of St. Terragnis and was quickly enamored by their emphasis on righteousness and justice. Wary of ever again standing on the backlines while others paid the cost, he insists on being involved in whatever actions of the church he can. He trained originally in seer magic under the cult, and later took up a warhammer and shield to solidify his new dedication. For years he kept wearing the same dark, shapeless robes he wore in the cult — he used his 15 gold from the Count’s invitation to fully embroider one set of them with intricate sun motifs in gold thread — until Session 4, when he tore them off and burned them. He now goes in his leather armour.
At Count Demetrius’s party, it was Ivek who first sensed something was deeply wrong — his attempt to bless a glass of champagne for the disturbed Sister Geraldine sent her fleeing in terror. Later, chained in the castle’s dungeon, he pulled Randoah clear of a reanimated corpse’s grasp and handed over his own Luck token to help finish it off. In the climactic fight in the witch’s giant kitchen, he crushed one of the giant spiders with his warhammer, then spent his last Luck token and his final spell together — blessing a stolen healing potion just in time to save Brielle’s life after she was pulled dying from the boiling cauldron.
Ivek rejoined the party in Session 3, wandering back into Strahd’s crypt out of the catacombs after hours lost among the tombs. He went straight back out again to Sergei’s weeping ghost to ask after the Sword of Vengeance, the last of the three artifacts, and refused to desecrate the tomb to get it — which proved unnecessary, as Sergei told him the sword was never buried at all: the Count keeps it at the very top of his castle and takes great pains to see no one else ever holds it.
In the courtyard fight against the corrupted Sister Geraldine he finally gave in and drank from the endless goblet of blood, which left him unable to harm any creature that had not first harmed him — and left his shadow wearing the shape of Mugdulbulb, the slime demon, whispering that he had never thought his sacrifice through and that the guilt would follow him forever. He was dragged down by the wolves and left dying, got back up, smashed a rising zombie’s skull in with his hammer, and then spent everything he had left blessing Brielle’s goblet of blood into a healing draught to pull Randoah out of the dead’s hands and save her life — the second time in three sessions he has saved a companion that exact way. He walked the rope across the river, spiked it for the others, and pulled the spike afterward so nothing could follow.
In the escape from Christine’s hunt, he turned in the saddle and screamed a huge rotted tree down across the trail behind them, which more than anything else is what lost the hounds. In the mist, Strahd offered him true dominion over others, libraries full of tomes, and an end to guilt — lions do not fear the concern of sheep, and you, sir, are a lion. Ivek refused, and the Count waved him off without even bothering to leave.
In Session 4 Ivek came home still shaken by whatever shadow of Mugdulbulb had touched him in Ravenloft. At the words “hooded figures” he ran for the neighbouring farm and found its farmer dead and dissolving in his chair. In the fight with the ooze-risen rats he called on St. Terragnis and heard only a deep, bubbling voice in his head — you are weak — and then, begging a third time, nothing at all; his hammer still broke two of the rats. He recognised the seal on the poisoned barrels as the Bittermold Estate, where his old cult kept a hideout, and on the pyre afterward he tore off the sun-embroidered cult robes he had never managed to stop wearing and burned them, and stood in his leather armour staring into the fire. He sold the golden candelabra to Finch. At the church he told Egrid that Sister Geraldine and Brother Kristoff were lost, and received from her a vision of a student’s soul trapped underground that only wants to rest; he stayed behind to pray, and before the day was out felt his saint’s favour return. Later, at Mathilda’s cottage, he told the party what he could bear to: that he is ashamed of his past, that much of it began at Bittermold, and that he suspects the pestilence comes from there. He left what gold he could spare at the church before the party set out.
In Session 5 Ivek set out along the Fairy Path with Brielle, Ulfgar and Gor. Beneath the old stone bridge he recognised a riverside shrine as the work of people who hold the bridge itself sacred, prayed there for safe passage and left a ration, and the sky favoured them for the rest of the day. He found the party’s hidden camp beside the spider woods, and a hidden, sheltered thicket again after the wolves. When he tried to grant Brielle a vision of what was rattling her cans in the night, he heard only a burbling laughter in his head; minutes later his blessing came through for her, and he kept Ulfgar alive with a vial of blessed water after a wolf tore the priest down. For the rest of the journey he blessed one companion after another with luck, spotted the Hangman’s Tree from a treetop, led the party back onto the Fairy Path and then south toward the Giant’s Playground, and on his second try at the pot, having watched Ulfgar, cooked a good moose stew.
