Zamani · Scoundrel 3 (Operative) · Homeworld Shensaati
Appearance
Lean, average height, with the deep earth-brown sun-tempered skin of his people and polished gemstones set flush into it at the temples and the backs of the hands. Raised ridges and plates run back over his skull — heat sinks, for a world that needs them. Fine geometric gold patterning traces his forearms and collarbones, the kind zamani wear to evoke the flow of time.
He dresses in nothing that carries an insignia. A plain travelling coat, practical clothes, a tool roll and a flat document case at his belt. Hands usually empty and open.
Background
Rotti is a native of Shensaati — a desert world with a mystical connection to the flow of time, homeworld of the zamani, and a world held by the Cavalon Empire.
He worked for the empire that holds it. The Cavalon Irregular Service is the quiet apparatus behind a nobility that styles itself chivalric: the part that finds disloyal subjects and seditionists so the knights never have to. Rotti was good at it, among his own people, on his own planet.
He was never a true believer in any of it.
He was caught up in a sting he had been coordinating himself, implicated by a rival from his own branch of the Service. He used his connections to slip the dragnet and finally got off-world with the help of his mentor, Tane Enos.
His intelligence and infiltration skills travel well, and he has had little trouble making his way in the broader galaxy since. He knows what it looks like when an organisation decides a person is expendable, because he has been on both ends of it.
Loadout
Ascension Gun — grappling launcher. Twelve storeys is not an obstacle.
Forger’s Kit and Infiltrator’s Kit — papers and locks, both with proficiency.
Sniper training, and Gadget Savvy for working a device and still acting in the same breath.
Grace Under Pressure — when someone spots him or a lie doesn’t land, he gets one more chance at it.
Notable
- Temporal Glimpse. After a rest he looks at fragments of possible futures and records one. He can substitute it for any roll he or a nearby ally makes, declared before the dice.
- Temporal Control. He acts first. Nearly always.
- Reversion. When something hits him he can snap back to where he stood a moment ago.
- Resistant to fire — a Shensaati upbringing.
Compassionate Use
Was knocked onto a rack at the Khymera farm, brought down with it when the security robot shot it out from under him, and did his best shooting from the floor — including the shot that took half the robot’s head off. At Hope’s Reach he gave a care-bot a false name, and it took him for Cavalon royalty and tried to bleed him for it, the first hint of what the building had been for. He knew the date on Project Viridian’s voided invoice: the day Shensaati, his own world, fell to the Cavalon Empire. The weapon in Ward 7 had been bought by his homeworld and aimed at the empire that holds it. Carried out every piece of paper he could find, and a photograph of a younger Vosk. At Ramp 5 he offered Vosk his leaves and a fine head of cabbage; at the Astro-Burger, weeks later, he critiqued the professionalism of the cover-up as the police landed.
