Origins

Etna Sola grew up on Prospero’s Dream, a third-generation Space Farmer. Her family honors Earth’s old religions by honoring air, water, wind, and earth. She’s grown disillusioned with the bureaucracy and red tape around food production on the station, and the lack of interest from upper management in embracing innovation. When the chance came to travel with the crew of The Second Chance, she jumped at it — a shot to get off Prospero’s Dream and experience nature organically.

The Price of Air

Etna tends the ship’s hydroponics bay — a salvaged cargo container in the hold, jury-rigged out of whatever the crew could scrounge, more post-apocalyptic than sterile-and-clean. She’s currently growing potatoes, chickpeas, and oyster mushrooms.
Etna was aboard The Second Chance when the Iron Cross boarding party took the ship, and spent most of the standoff with a gun at her head. When Carl blew the salvage bay hatch and the deck went sideways under everyone, she turned her foam gun on her captor and glued the two of them together instead — which at least took Jason “Fox” Fiero out of the fight as thoroughly as it took her. She stayed stuck until Marge shot him where he stood and then pulled her free. Once free, she pulled on a vac suit and sealed the hull breach an anti-armor round had punched clean through the ship, which was, at least, exactly what the foam gun was designed for.
When Zeid called for terms from the med bay, Etna was the one who walked up to the door to hear them, with Gaal beside her — she refused to trade away anything of the crew’s, promised only to relay his demands to the captain, and was on the floor with her ears ringing a minute later when he threw a flashbang into the corridor. She spent the rest of the night on the air. She found the environmental control slashed open beside the reactor, and when it became clear the scrubbers could not carry thirty-two people on one working filter, she pulled on a vac suit, crossed the cargo bay while it was still open to space, and plumbed her hydroponics container directly into the ship’s scrubber loop — her garden breathing for the crew as a living filter. It bought them roughly a day. It will also kill every plant in it.
While the others went into the terraforming station, Etna stayed aboard watching her garden yellow in the scrubber loop. When the crew opened the airlock to the station, she watched the ship’s oxygen readings begin to balance for the first time since the boarding.
