Origins

Varys was born to a family that didn’t have much, and he stole to feed them. He got good at it — at stealing, at running, and at hiding.
Then he tried to rob someone wealthy, and got caught. Instead of being thrown in prison, he was taught to refine his skills, so that he could be used.
For a while he got better. But the work his mentors gave him was dishonourable.
Eventually he ran. He hid from his mentors and lived hidden from most other people too. He still needed money, so he took refuge in the Guild — somewhere to earn a living and stay out of sight of the people pursuing him.

The Fallen Star

Session 1: The Baronet’s Commission

At the stairhead Varys watched a soldier who had lost an arm and a leg refuse his friends’ help, and he let the man keep his pride. He rode the lift down. In Godshome he picked up a new blade for close work. When the ambush came he was the quickest in the alley: his first arrow took a berserker in the throat, and his bow kept burning holes in the line until the darkness swallowed it.

Session 2: Three to the Dawn

Among the dead in the alley, Varys found one man whose hair was tied in a run of small knots, and knew the mark: the Nameless Ledger, the people who trained him and whom he ran from. On the flight to Bitter End, Lucia was sick in his face. That night he slipped past the warehouse guard while Sandy kept him talking, picked a lock that barely deserved the name, and prised open one of the sealed crates from Godshome. A drugged young man lay asleep in the straw, and there were two more like him. Burned into one crate, in thieves’ cant only Varys could read, were the Ledger’s mark and the words precious cargo. In the end he agreed to leave them and keep to the job. On the march he ranged ahead as the party’s scout, spotted the hooded procession crossing their path and brought the warning back. At every camp he strung cans and wire across the approaches. On the salt flat the Ledger’s mark turned up again, on a water barrel lost from a caravan deep inside the valley.
